Savan Thongvanh Practice Manager

Sounds pretty good eh?

In two weeks I'll be starting a new adventure. I'll be hopping over from my position as system architect for Nationwide Insurance and returning to my good ol' consulting firm QCI.

Yep, that's right. I'm leaving a high profile position at one of the country's top insurance companies to get back into consulting. Why? See this, then read on.

I love technology, meeting new people, solving problems, and then finding a different problem to solve. Often working at a big company does not afford you one or any of those luxuries. That's why I'm leaving. Am I sacrificing the stability of working in a big company and being a lifer?

I don't think so. No, I know I'm not. Here's why:

  • I firmly believe that if you're technically sound and have a good personality you'll always be employable
  • I returning to QCI. I worked for them previously for three years and ALWAYS had a project going. That's stability
  • And, I get most (and i mean almost ALL) of the benefits that I get from working at a big company

QCI hasn't been a slash and burn consulting company and I feel pretty good about that. Hopefully as the Java Practice Manager I'll be able to convince other people too and make ours one of the top shops in town.

Speaking of projects I already have my first assignment. I'll be working on a project for a medium sized company using this stack:

I'm really excited! Check back for revelations from this assignment!

On the side I'm also starting to learn Objective-C to try to build some iphone apps!

Please leave a comment, I'd love to hear why other people have/haven't considered consulting.
